***   NOTICE OF IMPORTANT CHANGE - POSTED 24 APRIL 2012   ***

The Victoria Ballroom Dance Society (VBDS) has decided to make a significant change in the format of Dance Pacifica for this year.  The Board has decided that Dance Pacifica 2012 will be a FORMAL GALA BALL, including a SHOWCASE DEMONSTRATION of Ballroom Dancing, and will be held in the evening only on June 9, 2012.  This ball will NOT INCLUDE A COMPETITION COMPONENT, either in the afternoon, or in the evening.

The last four years have seen a remarkable turnaround in the circumstances of VBDS.  From 2008 to 2012 membership has declined from 780 to fewer than 500.  Class registrations have declined commensurately.  Attendance at Dance Pacifica in 2008 and 2009 was 400+ and 375 - for practical purposes sold out.  The last two years attendance dropped to 275 and 225. Dance Pacifica was unsustainable financially with these low attendance numbers.  Last year expenses exceeded revenue by more than $6000 despite a large contribution from our raffle.  We have no reason to expect better performance this year, especially since we were having trouble recruiting the volunteer leadership required to produce Dance Pacifica.

During the coming year the board of VBDS will consider ways to reintroduce competition to the Dance Pacifica Ball. Your participation and ideas in this regard are welcome.  To share your ideas please do contact us via info@vbds.org or phone the VBDS Info Line at 250-721-JIVE (5483).
